How to Determine if an Employee Is Burned Out – Questions to Ask

Download Now

Whether you’re meeting with an employee one-on-one in a performance review setting, addressing an outward request for help or hosting an office seminar on burnout, there are several questions you can use to help determine if an employee is burned out. Consider the list below:

  1. Are you less productive at work than you were last year, last month or even last week?
  2. Are you feeling rushed at work or like your deadlines are unmanageable for you?
  3. Have you begun to resent tasks that used to feel routine to you or that you once enjoyed?
  4. Are you struggling with procrastination or having trouble getting started on tasks?
  5. Are you struggling to feel energized or identify the favorite parts of your job?
  6. Are you unable to concentrate for long enough to complete tasks during the day?
  7. Do you no longer feel proud of yourself as an employee or of your work product?
  8. Are you having trouble sleeping after work?
  9. Are you feeling physically tired during work hours?
  10. Are you experiencing physical symptoms of stress, such as headaches, migraines, stomach issues, or muscle and joint pain?
  11. Are you beginning to dislike your coworkers or managers?

If the answers to any of these questions are "yes," decide on a method to address the possibility of burnout with the employee.
